Day 8 – March 27th – Luoyang Longmen

I had booked the entry tickets for the Longmen grottoes yesterday on the train as on the internet it warned that holidays and weekends could be busy and even sell out.

The morning was bright and warm with the park only a 10 minute walk from our hotel.

The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that this sign and those in Pingyao are bilingual, Chinese and French, rather than the normal Chinese and English.

This is due to both areas being UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the official UNESCO language being French.

It was about a 20 minute walk from the entrance to the ticket gate and we were soon in.

As usual, plenty of food and souvenir stalls
Past the koi carp pond
Some of the thousands of carved caves containing Buddhas.
Rest rooms are plenty, usually every 4-500m, and very clean, although mostly “squat” type
Plenty of information along the way
The carp pavilion
The giant Buddha
A unique form of Jade only found here with a pattern that resembles plum blossom
A boat can take you back if you are tired
The Peonies are just coming out
Some of the rocks are not what they seem!
As usual we were much in demand for photos

So we had a great day but very tiring. In the park we enjoyed a tasty lunch with Diane and me sharing beef stir fry and rice and Gary enjoying “Grandma’s scrambled eggs with mixed vegetables“.

Feeling a bit thirsty we took a taxi into the city centre and found a craft beer pub with German lager at £1.25 a pint and so stopped there a while before heading back to our hotel.

I should also tell you that the “Didi” taxis here are super cheap, the 6 miles from city centre to hotel costing only £1.15.

And so off to Guangzhou tomorrow, see you there.
